Shooting Star(s) & the Moon, Venus, Jupiter etc.

Sleeping under the stars is an experience unto itself. In addition, being away from the city lights takes on a whole new level of fun, when you start taking star pictures. If u have not done it before, definitely give it a try :) In expectations of capturing a moment of Presides Meteor shower, headed to Trillium lake over last weekend (Aug 11-12, 2012) . Overall the meteor shower was pretty elusive than expected, always managing to put a show where the camera was not pointed. As the night was passing by, was worried that the moon rise (around 1:30 AM) might reduce the possibility of meteor sighting. But I was pretty surprised when everything just lined up just (around 3:30 AM) – the Venus, the Moon and the Jupiter – and even a meteor was adorning the scene. The star cluster you see a little off center on top is Pleiades nebula.

Hope u enjoy viewing as much as I did during the shooting !

  1. Fantastic shot Sathya! I love it! You had the perfect location to shoot from!

    • Thanks a bunch Michael !
I would not call it a perfect location, I was trying to get mt hood in the foreground & was trying to avoid the moon, but pretty much most of the showers were behind me. After shooting for couple of hours, decided to take a walk around the lake and include the moon in the composition and that is when the magic happened :)

  2. Wow, that’s a lucky capture.. Frame was very nicely set, but having a meteor passing though a frame is achievement. I didn’t know you were in Astronomy, by d way… You should caption this as: Missile towards Moon…

    • Hey Mayur, lucky indeed, if one has to ignore the 10’s of shots prior to this one ;-)
Not too much into astronomy. just enthralled by stars and night photography (just with the camera, no scopes or moving mounts)
Missile to the Moon … mmm love the caption , thanks :)

  3. how do you get time to visit so many places .. beautiful picture

    • Hey Bikram – U probably asked that out of exclamation rather than inquiry, I presume. Still I will use it as an excuse to count my blessings …
First off, am gifted to be out here in Pacific Northwest which is exceptionally beautiful – from the oceans to falls to countryside & what not …
I travel short, covering near by areas and try to get to the lesser known local gems
Above all have an family who is understanding and patient enough to stand by me (at times quiet literally)

  4. Excellent shot!
